What is rounding?
Rounding is the process used to estimate numbers based on specific criteria. If the next digit is less than 5, you round down, but if it’s 5 or higher, you round up. To round a number correctly, you look at the digit directly following the one you’re rounding. For decimal numbers, rounding can be done to the nearest whole number, tenth, or hundredth, making it easier to estimate quickly. For instance, when averaging a class's grades, rounding decimals helps to simplify the process without losing too much accuracy.
Why round numbers?
Rounding makes numbers easier to work with while maintaining their approximate value. But why is rounding necessary? There are a few reasons. Firstly, working with whole numbers for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is much simpler. If you only need an estimate and not an exact figure, rounding is ideal.
Take, for example, the scenario where you're calculating the square footage of a room you want to list online. The room measures 10.43 feet by 12.65 feet. You could multiply those exact numbers to get a precise area, but you likely don’t need to be that accurate. Rounding those numbers to 10 by 13 feet gives you an area of about 130 square feet, which is close enough to provide potential tenants with a general idea.
There are also times when extra decimal places simply aren’t necessary. When dealing with money, for example, anything beyond two decimal places would be pointless because there is no such thing as a fraction of a penny.
What are the rules for rounding numbers?
How do you decide whether to round a number up or down? There are some basic rules that guide this decision:
- Identify the digit to be rounded.
- Look at the digit directly to the right of it.
- If that digit is less than 5, leave the rounding digit as is, and turn the remaining digits to zero.
- If the digit is 5 or greater, increase the rounding digit by one, and change the rest to zeros.
What is rounding up and rounding down?
When rounding, we often use the terms "round up" or "round down" to indicate whether the number was increased or decreased. For example, if you’re rounding to the nearest ten, you would look at the ones place. If rounding 7486 to the nearest ten, it becomes 7490. When rounding to the nearest hundred, you look at the tens place. So, 7456 would round to 7500.
What are some examples of rounding?
Let’s say you’re converting 1/3 to decimal. The resulting decimal goes on infinitely, but you typically round it to 0.33 or 0.333 when you need to use it in calculations. Similarly, if you're multiplying 25 by 75, you get 1875. Now, try adding 0.25 and 0.75, which gives you 0.1875. Rounding that to two decimal places gives you 0.19.
When calculating sales tax, rounding is also useful. For example, if you buy something for $56.30 and the sales tax is 3%, the tax amount comes to $1.689, which rounds to $1.69.
Rounding is especially handy in day-to-day situations. If you and your friends are ordering food and want to ensure you have enough cash, rounding each item to the nearest dollar makes adding up the total quick and easy.
For larger numbers, it’s often better to round to the nearest multiple of 10, 100, 1,000, or even a million. Take the population of New York City, which was estimated at 8,214,426 in 2006. Rather than remember that exact number, rounding it to 8 million is much simpler.
In the end, exact numbers aren’t always necessary, and working with rounded figures can make life easier. It’s often more practical to estimate travel time as 30 minutes instead of 25, or to round a population figure to 8 million instead of memorising 8,214,426.
